Some more idea things for that Pokemon thing.

1) Gene will evolve his Eevee into the type that best counters your starter. If you get an Eevee of your own later on down the line and send it out during battle, he’ll exclaim that it’s no good to follow in his footsteps, you have to be great on your own.

2) All of the adoptable Pokemon’s first Normal-type damage move (Tackle, Scratch, etc) can actually hit Ghost-types. They do shit for damage, though, but they can hit. Basically just for balance reasons when starting out if you pick a Ghost-type.

3) The Pokemon Adoption Center can actually let you put your own Pokemon up for adoption. This is done through an internet connection, and players of an appropriate level can see other Trainers’ Pokemon and adopt them. You’ll even get a message from Marjorie saying that the Pokemon you put up for adoption has found a new happy home!

4) Pokemon Gyms that you run into aren’t all based on types. Instead they’ll be an assortment of different Pokemon that each Leader likes based on their own personality. Each Leader also has six Pokemon of their own. This keeps things from being TOO typecast and predictable. It should genuinely be a surprise and a challenge. If they’re Gym Leaders, then they had to work to get there, right? Why would someone with the authority to hand out badges only have three Pokemon around level 20 of the same type? What does beating someone like that prove?

That’s all I can think of for now.
