Alright. Massively huge spoiler thing below the break.
Didn’t want to say much about it because it’s not like… OFFICIALLY out or anything but I’ll go ahead and tell you that it’s the worst the show’s ever been and you shouldn’t bother even watching it.
Nah, just kidding I loved it. A lot.
They did pretty well with all the stuff they had to work with, and with some really good character interaction, too. Seriously, everything that Discord did was entertaining and it was fun to watch him complain about not being able to just Chaos everything.
The scene where he finds “Fluttershy” and then immediately realizes that it’s a changeling? Amazing. Like he KNOWS that there’s no way one of them could be real but since she means so much to him, he can’t bring himself to leave even if there’s a 0.001% chance that maybe one of them is real. The look on his face is priceless. It’s so good to see Discord legit care and put his neck out for someone that isn’t himself. The hug they had at the very end was diabetes inducing.
His little stand-up distraction was great, too. It feels like DeLancie had a blast doing the episodes.
Trixie stole the fucking show, though. Seriously, every line she had was golden and it was so delicious to watch her rub the fact that Glimmer considers her to be her best friend in Twilight’s face. Twi’s reactions made it that much better, too. Trixie knows she gets on Twilight’s nerves and she loves every minute of it. It makes sense, because of course you can have friends that have other friends that you don’t like. It feels like at this point, Trixie doesn’t even mind Twilight at all, she just knows how to get her goat.
I love how she talks a mean game, but Trixie being kind of a wimp when it comes to actual threats is always cute. I laughed hard whenever she was screaming her head off in that silent bubble that Glimglam made and her fidgeting and trotting in place just made her adorable. Her reluctance to do things but going through with them because of her BEST FRIEND shows a lot of guts, and Trixie stepping up for Glimmer at the end there to be the distraction was so good. Also kinda intense with all those Changelings pouring down on her.
After this season, I completely and unapologetically ship Starlight and Trixie. They’re just way too cute together. I’m glad that Trixie has some happiness in her life, now.
Man the Changeling hive was super cool. EVERYTHING about the changelings is cool, really. I loved how it looked, and the fact that pathways just randomly open and shuffle around made everything feel that much more alien. It was great. Chrysalis was awesome, too, and her reveal was super fucking creepy. How her head turned with those little cracking noises just made me lose it. She was pretty damn threatening, too, with her knocking Glimmer around as much as physically possible given the TV rating. She felt powerful.
…Okay I guess I have to talk about it.
Everyone’s kinda divided on how the new Changelings look, and personally I don’t really mind them at all. They just look like Changelings, but colored and without holes. I like how they have different features, too. Like some have those three crystals, some have larger and spikier horns, and some don’t seem to have wings at all. It really feels like there are different types of them, just like how there are different types of ponies. Maybe they’ll have different jobs?
However, Thorax looks a little… odd. Like I’m not gonna deny he looks the weirdest in all of this, but it’s not that bad and I see what they’re going for. He’s got proportions of a deer and huge horns that look like a beetle. STAG beetle. Get it? I’m fine with big rainbow faggot deer bug horse. I’ve always liked Thorax, though, he’s pretty cute. He never talked after the change, and that was a little weird.
It was funny to me how Celestia IMMEDIATELY got right in there to do the diplomacy thing. Like the smoke hadn’t even cleared and she was all about that bug ass. How many kingdoms does this make that Spike has had a direct hand in creating allies out of? Three? First Sombra and the Crystal Ponies, then Ember and the Dragons, and now Thorax and the Changelings. God damn, Spike is a master.
Chrysalis not accepting friendship was top-fucking-notch. It was great how she denied Glimmer and NEXT TIME’d out of there like a good, unrepentantly evil villain should. Chrysalis probably used the Changelings for her plans of domination and greed. It wouldn’t make sense for to her to go “okay I was wrong” and then become a good pony. Plus, with the number of people upset at the new Changelings, imagine how pissed people would be if CHRYSALIS turned into one of those. It’s like Maleficent turning into a good fairy. There are just things that you keep evil.
The way that the change happened was pretty fast, but that’s really to be expected with how much they had to do. They had to show the Changeling hive. They had to make them a real threat. They had to show Chrysalis and make her a threat, too. They also had to show Glimglam’s Suicide Squad learning how to work together, and also had to show Glimglam realizing that she can take on a leader position and NOT go full-on dictator with it. All those PLUS the new Changeling reveal and King Thorax makes for one hell of a stacked 22 minute episode.
After thinking about it, the only thing I wish was different was making it so ALL of the Changelings there didn’t change. Like make some still loyal to Chrysalis, because there’s always going to be those kinds, right? But even though they didn’t, Chrysalis is still a queen, and my bet is that she’s going to fly off and start a new hive. Changeling war, maybe? Probably not but it’d be cool. Regardless, there’s still probably going to be bad Changelings. The only difference is that there are other kinds of them, now.
Overall, the finale was great and it singlehandedly made me hype for pony again after a kind of bland season. I can understand people being upset at the look of the new Changelings, but given everything that could have happened? I’ll take an argument over aesthetics during the hiatus instead of something bigger.
